Elizabeth Smart to Speak at Positive Living Community Conference

July 26, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FIRST ANNUAL POSITIVE LIVING COMMUNITY CONFERENCE

SAVE THE DATE: SEPTEMBER 22, 2019, AFTON, WY

The Star Valley Medical Center Auxiliary is excited to announce the first annual Positive Living Community Conference which will take place September 22, 2018 at the Afton High School Auditorium, Afton Wyoming. The focus of the inaugural event will be to uplift the lives of men, women and children through individual and panel presentations, which will be centered on opening dialogue to reinforce and strengthen positive, informative family and community discussions.

We are pleased to share that our first guest speaker will be Elizabeth Smart. The abduction of Elizabeth Smart was one of the most followed child abduction cases of our time.  Through this traumatic  experience,  Elizabeth  has  become  an  advocate  for  change  related  to  child  abduction,  recovery  programs,  and  National  legislation.  The Founder  of  the  “Elizabeth  Smart  Foundation”,  Elizabeth  has  also  helped  promote  The  National  AMBER  Alert,  The  Adam  Walsh  Child  Protection  &  Safety  Act  and  other  safety  legislation  to  help  prevent  abductions.

Elizabeth  has  chronicled  her  experiences  in  the  New  York  Times  best-selling  book,  "My  Story."  In  addition,  she  and  other  abduction  survivors  worked  with  the  Department  of  Justice  to  create  a  survivors  guide,  entitled,  “You're  Not  Alone:  The  Journey  From  Abduction  to  Empowerment.”  This  guide  is  meant  to  encourage  children  who  have  gone  through  similar  experiences  not  to  give  up  but  to  know  that  there  is  hope  for  a  rewarding  life.

Elizabeth  has  recently  released  a  new  powerful  and  inspiring  book  about  what  it  takes  to  overcome  trauma,  find  the  strength  to  move  on,  and  reclaim  one’s  life.  "Where  There’s  Hope"  is  the  result  of  Elizabeth’s  mission:  It  is  both  an  up-close-and-personal  glimpse  into  her  healing  process  and  a  heartfelt  how-to  guide  for  readers  to  make  peace  with  the  past  and  embrace  the  future.  Elizabeth’s abduction  and  recovery  continue  to  motivate  parents,  law  enforcement  and  leaders  worldwide  to  focus  on  children’s  safety.

We look forward to bringing together attendees from through western Wyoming and eastern Idaho to participate in this event and open dialogue critical to create safe, healthy and resilient communities.  There will be a book signing opportunity with Elizabeth Smart after the conference.

Event Description

The Positive Living Community Conference will focus on opening dialogue to reinforce and strengthen positive and informative discussions within the family and community.  Each year will address a new and relevent topic to engage the community and encourage conversation and uplift the lives of the men, women and children living in Star Valley and surrounding areas.

This year, the first of the annual conference series, will feature Elizabeth Smart as the keynote speaker.  After the keynote presentation, a panel of local experts from law enforcement, healthcare, behavioral health, school district, support agencies, and government will take the stage to answer questions and discuss services available to the community.  They will share information about trends in our area and talk about programs that are in place to protect the community and residents.

The program will end with a book signing with Elizabeth Smart and opportunities to browse booths for snacks and further information.  For further information on this event, please contact the SVMC Auxiliary at 885-5861.
